He earned his degree from Law School and his degree in sociology at ELTE. He worked first at the Medical University of Pécs as a sociologist and then along with his colleagues at the university in 1991 he founded the Institute Fact doing sociology-related research. He is the chair of the institute even today. During his work at the university he participated in several, health-related sociological research projects. Based on these experiences he focussed on the social aspects of well-being. In the middle of the 90’s with his colleague and business partner, Zsuzsanna Füzesi, MD he worked out a model that served the development of community-based health and life quality. The model was implemented in practice over a decade, in almost 400 Hungarian settlements and was brought to life with the support of the Soros Foundation. The programme, known as “health-plan” was implemented and taken over by the health-care government in the mid 2000’s and since then the model has been applied in several versions, it is, even today, adopted mainly to form and shape behaviour towards health. Following the experiences gained during the joint work with the Soros Foundation, to further improve the model, Laszlo Tistyan began to focus on certain aspects of communities, with the questions of community planning, social autonomy and the relationship between individuals and communities. His experiences gained in the latter topics were applied in numerous regional development concepts with regards to the local society.
